Pregnant women find themselves facing a whole lot of restrictions. Some such as smoking and alcohol are expected, but some others – such as hair removal methods – are not. At our Boston threading salon, we’ve often been asked by customers if threading is safe for pregnant women. The answer is yes.

It is a perfectly natural procedure that uses no chemicals, and doesn’t modify your body or introduce new elements into it.

Safety

Therefore, threading is safe during pregnancy. Waxing, shaving and trimming are also safe for pregnant women.
However, there is a caveat. While these procedures are safe, you might find them a whole lot more painful if you’re pregnant, because your skin will likely be more sensitive than usual. Shaving may present problems as well, because you may experience razor burn because of it. In threading, however, certain minor adjustments can be made to alleviate pain to a small degree. Waxing does not present that option. These were the hair removal methods that are safe during pregnancy.

What about the ones that aren’t?

Laser hair removal, for one, is not safe during pregnancy. The reasons behind it aren’t clearly known yet, but when in doubt, it’s best to err on the side of caution. The rays can harm the developing fetus, and if you get it done on your breasts, it may also hamper your ability to breastfeed.

Microblading is also not safe while pregnant. This is firstly because your hormones will be a wreck, which causes a whole bunch of problems – it may cause you to feel more pain and/or discomfort, it may lead to unpleasant side effects after the procedure. Plus, the pigment may not ‘settle’ well into your skin due to the hormones. And then of course, there’s the fact that the pigments are chemicals, and they’re being introduced inside your body – which you want to avoid during pregnancy.
